Hi,
This has been on my mind for quite a while now and I haven't found any answers yet. I thought I'd ask here. Why do some people place hair bands at the top of the neck/headstock join?

It can be used to get rid of all that extra harmonic noise whenever the player is tapping, or it could just be used as a mute for a different sound when playing normally.

There are several reasons:
Some players do a tapped 2 handed thing and it keeps the open strings from making sound.
Other players are trying to damp the sympathetic vibrations between the nut and tuners which sometimes cause an annoying buzz or false note that makes the bass sound out of tune.
It may also be a way to add a bit of down pressure behind then nut to true the open string and add sustain.

Haha, that too.

Far as I know, that's a Wooten family thing, not just Vic's.

If you wanna get really into it, Sheehan copied Vic Wooten and Vic Wooten copied Reggie Wooten.

Back to the question...they can also act as mild mutes when pulled down past the nut onto the strings....
