I took some foam I had laying around, and added another layer to the already present foam, because I couldn't adjust the pickups any higher. The foam wouldn't support them. I notice a HUGE volume increase, while also getting a bit in clarity. It's very noticable.

Good for you...it is very important for people to realise that in order to get the best performance from their pickups, that they need to be raised to optimum height.

Pickups too far away will sound thin and weak. Pickups too close can cause string dampening and unpleasant "wolf" tones.
Pickups at optimum height will sound full and big.

How close you put your pickups depends on strings...pickup location (closer as you get closer to bridge)...and string action.

It'll also mess with magnetic string pull and your dynamics.

If it works for you- cool!

I also used to think that overwound pickups were the cat's pajamas.
