Good for you...it is very important for people to realise that in order to get the best performance from their pickups, that they need to be raised to optimum height.
Pickups too far away will sound thin and weak. Pickups too close can cause string dampening and unpleasant "wolf" tones.
Pickups at optimum height will sound full and big.
How close you put your pickups depends on strings...pickup location (closer as you get closer to bridge)...and string action.
