HELP! BUZZ!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a nice Squire J Bass.

It's absolutely beautiful for the price I paid. The tone is exactly what I've been looking for.

But, I've got a problem. Sometimes when I play, there is a buzzing and I have no idea what's doing it.

Please help, I don't want to have to give up my new baby.

should be in setup / repair?

Question from the detectives...

What kind of buzz? fret buzz, electronic kind of buzz? Only When you dont touch the strings at all, and when you put your hand on it, it stops?

if fret buzz, is it on all strings? one or two string? all across the fretboard? near the neck? at the body?

Agreed, on all accounts. Moved.

What kind of buzz, DW? Electronic, or fret buzz?

Fret Buzz. My last bass had terrible buzz in the electronics, but this one is fine. It's found on all strings. I've noticed it's particularly bad on the 5th and 6th frets.

I sounds like your neck is too straight or maybe even back bowed and/or your string height is too low. Look down your neck. It should be very slightly bowed forward. If if not, you need to loosen your truss rod about 1/4 turn each day until you have a barely noticeable bow toward the front/top of the bass. If it's already bowed like that, your strings are too low and you need to raise the saddles until you can play without the buzz. I hope this helps and I hope you don't need your frets levelled. That would be a lot more trouble.
