Help! Cable tip lodged inside jack!

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me start off by saying that I need straplocks. Anyway, my strap came off while I was tuning and my bass dropped, straight on the instrument cable, which bent the end. It still worked though, so just chalked it up to luck. Today, the end of the cable completely came apart - while inside my bass! The whole thing fell out of the jack, except the little pointy thing on the end. Now, it's stuck! I cannot figure out a way to get that sucker out. I can't push it out from the back without completely destroying the jack,a nd I can't think of a logical way to get it out! I tried pushing the remains of the old cable end in there to snag it, but no luck.

What kind of bass, and how/where is the jack located and mounted?

It's a Raven bass. You probably haven't seen one, since I've never found another one after much searching. I payed $200 used for it at a local shop, plays and sounds great but I can't find any info on it. It is located on the side of the bass, not the face. The jack itself is solid, there are no holes or anything on the bottom (obviously).

This is what pkr2 sugested to someone else with the same problem:

"If it wont push on through, get together a plastic soda straw, a tube of the gel type superglue and a wood kitchen match.
cut a piece of the soda atraw about a half inch or so shorter than the match. Put the piece of soda straw into the jack until it rests on the detatched tip. Put a tiny dab of the super glue on the end of the match stick and push it down into the soda straw until it contacts the tip and be careful not to move the match for about 5 minues to allow the glue to set up. now pull the match stick straight out of the hole and the tip should come out with it, bringing the straw out at the same time.
Don't skip the straw part or you may glue the matchstick into the jack."

Alright, any other ideas? Now, all i've got is a tip with some superglue on it still stuck in the jack. I tried superglue, silicone, I even tried JB Weld! Nothing seems to bond to it! Should I just put a new jack in it? They're cheap.

This might sound kind of strange but take it to a locksmith. This isn't alot different than the work they have to do when someone breaks off part of a key in a sealed lock.

I had the same problem with the same kind of jack on my Ibanez Musician, and a simple very narrow pair of tweezers (the needle-ended kind) and a little determination took care of it.

Yep, just go ahead and change it out. As you said, they aren't very expensive.

Eliminate the aggravation factor. In 20 min, for $10-15 you are back in business, movin' on, no worries.
