help with Fender Jazz setup - and bridge / string height.

ok guys .. this is a '98 MIM V Jazz I got used a few weeks ago.

I've never done a setup on a guitar .. I took instructions from fenders site. The neck was ridiculously concave .. I had to do about at least full turn on the truss rod to get it to just a very small amount of concave.

Once I got that setup right .. it felt a lot better playing it .. but when going to set the action, the height of the b string was about 16/64ths at the 17th fret. Fenders site says it should be about 7/64ths.

Look at the bridge in the pick above .. I don't think it's stock .. and the height is already as low as this bridge will allow. I remember reading somewhere that some aftermarket bridges have a base plate that's too thick (3/8" .. which is about what this one is.) And people suggested either grinding down the bottom or routing out about 1/4" underneath the bridge plate to lower it ..

Does it look like an aftermarket bridge to you guys? Is there something I'm missing here? I can't lower the action down at all and want too still as 16/64th's across all the strings seems ridiculously high. I'd been playing this bass for about 2 weeks this way and it's a lot easier to play with the relief set correctly now ... I just can't set the action any lower!

Havent seen the original... but that doesent look like stock fender.. not even for mim's...

Id take measurements and post them..
See if anybody has a tip on a "lower" bridge..
Then search for the measurements on the LeaoQuan Badass V bridge (5sting).. I just love the way they look, sound and "feel"..

HTH..

josh,

are you talking about shimming the neck?

didn't think about that .. is it advisible though to shim it more than say an 1/8th of an inch? I need to lower the strings at least 8/64th's (which will be 1/8th of an inch) .. and have room to play .. maybe even shimming upwards of 1/4 of an inch.
