Help! I need info on bass construction for Rockschool

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I am currently studying grade 6 rockschool but don't have a bass teacher and would like to know if anyone can give me some info on bass construction, which is one of the areas you have to cover for the general musicianship questions in grade 6 rockschool trinity on the bass? Or if anyone knows of a good website or book that would be great. I'm not entirely sure what I have to cover as the rockschool book is not very specific. It just says you need to know about all aspects of bass construction??? then in the companion guide it has a question asking about how to play a fretless bass which is a bass construction question??

I need someone with knowledge. Please help! Also if anyone could recommend an advanced bass tutor in hertfordshire, London or any where near there that would be great.

Thanks

Well, it is a bit vague of a request, but here's a few things to digest (I suggest a few hrs and a big cup o' tea!):

1) Spend some time reading the build threads in our very own Luthier's Corner:

Luthier's Corner - TalkBass Forums

Lot's of great discussion with pictorials on how folks are actually making basses.

2) For more detail on the above, see the sticky thread on "How to..." at the top of that forum:

New "How to" section

3) And finally, once you've gotten some basics on construction, don't be afraid to read a little on setups (to make sure your bass is playing at its best):

ALL BASIC SETUP QUESTIONS ANSWERED HERE

I like the Fender guide myself...

Good luck!

There are a couple of books that are widely recommended for bass/guitar building:

Building Electric Guitars by Martin Koch
Amazon.com: Building Electric Guitars: How to Make Solid-Body, Hollow-Body and Semi-Acoustic Electric Guitars and Bass Guitars (9783901314070): Martin Koch: Books

Making Your Own Electric Guitar by Melvyn Hiscock

Dan Erlewine's books on guitar repair contain all the info you need, and are a great resource.

And - what, where or who is "Rockschool"?

Is Jack Black involved?
