Exclamation Help? I'm a novice =]

Oooookay... so,

I got this bass as a gift, it looks like a p bass, there are no corporate markings on the headstock or anywhere else for that matter. I'd be surprised if this thing didnt just poof into existence.

First things first, I'm 19, jobless and no money in the bank. I'M POOR. If I had the money I'd go about just taking my bass in and have it done professionally. Cheap and handy is the way to go for me so keep all this in mind please.

PROBLEMS:

Pickups buzz
Frets 1 and 19 buzz (tried adjusting to a lower action my self and somehow messed it up worse, there was also a prior buzz)
I'm sure the bridge is un aligned

Its beat up but it works great still and I figured these are pretty basic things, however I have NO clue what i'm doing and would really like to learn for future referencing.

I'll edit if anything else comes up.

please help, I'm in the dark here

And then having done that come back and ask any specific questions you have about your bass. Learning what the various parts of a bass do and how one sets them up is an important thing for a player to know even when paying others to do the work.

Note lowering action will make fret buzz (from uneven frets) worse not better. Given a 50-50 choice you picked the wrong one. Truss rod adjustment factors in here too. Read the stickies.

The Fender guide is an excellent place to start.
