Help loosening stiff tuning keys

I have a bass with really stiff feeling tuning keys , I was wondering what people use to solve this problem , I was thinking a bit of WD40 but wondered what others thought

What kind of bass? What kind of tuners?

BTW, WD40 is not a lubricant. See: Post below.

Don't lubricate with anything that will gather dust and grit. Graphite is often used on mechanical assemblies where you don't want to leave stick residue.
