Help me decipher some jargon!

Currently looking at a Music Man article on how to set up a bass. My Stingray was beautiful to play on the factory settings, but a couple of years back the electronics fried themselves, and whilst it get getting repaired they changed the action etc. Since then it's not been anywhere near as nice to play. I've tried in the past few weeks to set it up myself but I don't really know what I'm doing; I've made it almost unplayable at the moment (that combined with totally dead strings. Can't buy the ones I like because of friggin' PayPal!)

But ANYWAY. Can someone tell me what some of this jargon means/clear up a few points? Ta.

If there is no relief in the neck, a little pressure in the middle of the neck (after adjusting the trussrod wheel) should help.
Pressure on the neck means what? Also, which way to I turn the trussrod wheel to do that?

Factory String heights are: Bass side 3/32 to 7/64 Treble side: 5/64" to 7/64"
Bass side - Low E (on a 4), and Treble side - G?

Quote:
The pickup should be 4/32" to 5/32" on the bass side and slightly closer (4/32" to 5/32" on the treble side. This is determined by tuning and volume of strings measured by the top of the pole piece to the bottom of the strings.
What's a pole piece? And also, is the 'bottom' of the string the bridge or the nut? (Often with this kind of thing they're the opposite to what I think.)

Thanks!

No relief = neck bow towards strings which means your truss rod is too tight. So loosen it. (Lefty loosy, Righty tighty)

Bass Side = Low E.

Pole Piece = The round silver magnets in the pickups.

Bottom of the string = The Bridge Side or Ball End.

JDJen had it mostly right except for the "bottom of the string".

A string has a "top" and "bottom" its entire length.

The bottom is the side of the string closer to the fretboard. The top is the farthest from the fretboard. It has nothing to do with ball ends.

To set the height, measure from the pole piece perpendicular to the pickup. The first part of the string (closest to the pickup) is the bottom. If you measure to the top, you would be off by the width of the string.

Also, check out the SETUP sticky at the top of this sub-forum.

slyjoe is right.

I was thinking of the string as if it were going to be installed.
