Question Help me save my bass from the bin

Sign in to disble this ad
I need your help. I bought a Peavey Fury IV, and when it arrived the body had been nearly split in two! I love the neck so much that I don't want to lose it. I have tried finding a replacement Fury IV body without success (not suprising).

My question is - Is there another make of body that I could use instead of an original? I am in no way a luthier, so it would have to be something that a near idiot could do, and at not a great cost as my funds are limited. Any ideas?

I got some back from the seller (Ebay). He stated that I should not have signed for the parcel until I had checked it, but as it looked fine from the outside, and the courier was not willing to wait 10 minutes for me to open it, I didn't (I have surely learnt my lesson!!) In the end it cost me £50. That's life.

Here are two pics of the damage. The arrows in the first show the crack which actually goes right across the body. This pic also shows the dint (bottom right) where the guitar was hit to cause the split. The second pic shows the depth of the crack. I think I am right in saying the body is lost.

I did lose it with the seller - but that was 2 months ago. Since then I have been hunting for a replacement Fury IV body here in the UK.

If it's a clean split that runs with th grain of the wood, It looks a lot worse than it is.

It broke at the weakest place, where the cavity is routed.

The body can be split the rest of the way into 2 seperate pieces and the grain patterns of the two pieces will interlock and realign the two pieces exactly for regluing. The glue joint will be almost invisible.

If you have to throw it in the trash bin, throw it in mine!

i had a similair problem years ago with a cheapo ibanez. It played fine after its accident, and despite a split in the same places as yours, it help up for years and years. Its up in the attic now, gathering dust, in one piece.

Thanks for that.

If I reglue the body, will it affect tone? And do I use standard wood glue?

Titebond is a good glue. One caution: make absolutely sure you have a good method of clamping everything back in place before you apply any glue. That means a dry fit first. You'll only have one chance.

No, it wont affect the tone.

Thanks again. I think I can clamp the whole body using my Workmate stand. I'll give a try. If it doesn't work I can still look for another body.
