Exclamation Help me with string buzz!!!!!!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought a Tobias 6 string from a TBer who had converted it to fretless. I took it to the shop for a set up and it had some string buzzing going on. I refinished the neck and still had some string buzz. I recently changed to a lighter gauge of strings (B string is 100) and now I have insane amounts of string buzz from about the fifth fret down to the nut. I raised the action to about as high as it goes and the buzz isn't as bad. I would like to keep the light gauge because I like the sound. Is there anything else I can do about the buzzing?

The seller didn't tell me anything. I didn't realize that it had been de-fretted until I got it.

I got the action where I want it and where it sounds good. The only bad string buzz is on the first fret and a little bit on the second fret. I'll try adjusting the truss rod and see if that helps.

Thanks

CK

what did dad get? dad got hosed.

josh was asking what the person you took it too said about it. if i were you id 1.try to return it to the seller. 2. take it back to the guy who did the setup and tell him he never fixed the problem.

shops tend to be so swamped with work that sometimes they let instruments go without actually fixing the problems. you need to be on there ass about it sometimes. after all, that what you paid him for right?

Unless you have a 6 string fretless to give me I'm keeping the bass.

Your B string is .100? That's an E string gauge. No wonder it's buzzing..

I know its an E string. I wasn't happy with the size of my old B string so I decided to move every string one down. E to B, A to E, etc. I really like the sound I get from it now so I would like to keep the guages where they are now. I just got back from the gym so I haven't had time to mess around with the truss rod yet.

I'm no luthier, but I believe the notches in the nut are sized for the strings, so you might be adding to the problem by putting strings where they weren't intended to go.

Well I've been tweaking the truss rod a little bit and I 'm making progress.

Success!!

Well, I've been tweaking the truss rod for the last couple of days and I have almost no string buzz. I'm not having any problems with the nut either.

I was just following one of the guides in the sticky and turning the truss rod about a quarter turn a day. I don't have any way to measure.

Well, I finally measured and got the truss rod set, the string height set, and the intonation set and now this bass sounds amazing.
