Hello everyone. I have a question, and hopefully someone can help. I have 2001 MIA 4 string p bass that I set up complete with flatwounds, but the problem is that the action is still too high for my tastes. I took it to the luthier that set up my other basses, and he said that I had did a great job and he really didn't need to do anything to it. As I said, the problem is that I still feel as though the action is still just a little too high, but when I lower the strings I get buzzing. I was wondering is there anything to get the action even lower, and if so what?

I went back up to pick it up after it was done and when I played it the bass was buzzing a bit. I asked Greg what the deal was and he plugged it in. I couldn't hear the buzzing through the amplifier.
My point is that maybe you are trying to hard to keep out buzzing that really isn't harming anything. Or you may like a little bit more of that grindy sound.
OR a common problem I see with self setups now is that the outter strings (E, G)are way high while the inner strings (A, D) are much more playible. If this is more like your problem then you need to adjust the string heighth to match with the radius of your fretboard. |

You'll need to slacken off the truss rod a trifle and experiment from there.

I used the gary willis setup guide as a tool to set it up. would a badass bridge help with this problem, because I took it to another luthier and he said the neck was straight with just enough curve. ???? The bass belonged to a punk rocker, and he tossed it numerous times and was really rough with it!

The abuse doesn't matter unless there are broken parts. The pronouncements of techs that have seen it might matter. However, until there is data posted here there can be no valid, learned or otherwise, opinion or diagnosis given or made.
How much relief is in the neck?
What is the string height at the twelfth fret both bass and treble?
Measure your other basses and define what it is that you like about those setups.
Post your findings and expect responses posthaste. |

As to your problem; what 202 said!
That's a good reason to learn to set your instrument up the way that you like it. You don't need to depend on what the tech says.

Also how hard to you play? Do you play with a pick, fingers, slap. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
