Help! Neck was removed and now all strings completely touch fretboard

I'm a new bassist and I have a huge problem. The neck on my Epi Thunderbird was removed and put back on but now all the strings touch the fretboard and won't tune. Does this involve the truss rod?

If you just put the neck back on then you'll have to wait a couple of hours. All the strings being off will cause the neck to bow backwards since it has no tension on it. As a result you have to wait for the tension of the strings to pull it back into place.

the best advice i can give is that if you don't know what you're doing, take your bass to a tech, and don't try to fix it yourself.

Hi welcome to TB.

Don't panic. To understand whats going on be sure to read the 'Stickies" at the beginning of the "Hardware, setup and repair" section of the Forum called " ALL BASIC SETUP QUESTIONS ANSWERED HERE"

After that, if your unsure as to what to do next, Take it to somebody and have it set up. (Usually around $35).

We all have to start someplace.

best way is to hang it from the top of the neck if at all possible ... laying flat in a hardshell case is probably second best.

whatever you do, don't leave it leaning in a corner, strings to the wall. that will just make it worse.

Actually, I had this newbie problem once. Simple fix; its just that the neck isnt sitting in properly. Happens on alot of basses where its a tight fit, and it wont sit in even when you tighten the neck bolts. Just undo the bolts, push it in nice and proper (look if theres a gap between the neck and the body.)

To experienced guys here: In order to help new guys we must think like new guys, maybe he didnt think to check that its sitting in properly. It might seem obvious to us, but everyones mind operates differently.

Something I thought of when I read this is that there may have been a shim in there when he took off the neck that in turn got dropped and wasn’t noticed. That would account for the neck being set at the wrong angle, thus the strings bottoming out.

This was dead on. The neck wasn't put back on correctly. I unbolted it and pushed it in as far as it would go. Back to normal. Thanks.

Everybody else: Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it.

Check the 3 point bridge. My guess would be that you got the bridge on wrong.

guess you found the problem.

Why is it bad to have the bass in a corner leaning on a wall ?
How will this make it worse.
I keep all 4 basses leaning in cases on a wall....so what ?

For the benefit of anyone who reads this thread later....

Disregard all this advice. Every bit of it is wrong.
