Help: One dead note on my Birdsong

Sign in to disble this ad
Should I do anything about this? I changed strings on my 3 month old Cortobass last week. A day or two later I fine tuned the intonation and all was well.

Last night I noticed the action seemed a bit high in the mid and upper frets, so I performed a minor truss rod adjustment, about 1/8 turn to the right. I used the Jerzy Drozd Guide to walk me through. The action between the 7th and 9th frets when pressing the first and last fret went down just a bit. As I was checking out all the frets I found that the E string buzzes dead at the 19th fret. It has a slight buzz at fret 20 but is fine everywhere else, above and below. None of the other strings have any fret buzz.

The thing is I never play the E that high up the neck so I don't know if this is a new thing or not. But I find it odd that the 19th fret would be so dead while the 20, 21, etc. is not.

Should I let it go or can something be done to correct this? Now that I know its there its bugging me. I should also mention that the weather around here has seesawed between extreme humidity and very dry more than once in the last few weeks.

Thanks in advance.

If you are playing the 19th fret, why are you playing bass?
Seriously though, if you never play up there, learn to ignore it.
You're being anal retentive for no reason.
I'm new, but from what I've read (I do a lot of reading) the chances of buying a bass without at least one dead note are slim and none and slim is packing his bags. Be glad it's a note you never play so you won't have to work around it.

I've been saying the same thing all day. I might have had this issue before the adjustment and never knew it. Just want to make sure it's nothing I should pay attention to and thought I'd put it before wiser folks than me around this forum.

Thanks

A dead note at the 19th fret is unlikely. Maybe the 19th fret is too low?

It turns out that the 21st fret is popping up a bit on the E string side. When I fret the 19th the string makes full contact with it and deadens it. I have the same thing going on with the G string side of fret 17 but it isn't causing a buzz.

Anyway, Scott is on it and said its an easy fix, not worth the shipping cost to Texas, so I'm bringing it to a well regarded local luthier today. Here is the culprit:
