Help out a NOOB

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok I am a complete novice at this whole thing but I want to learn. I recently found a great deal on an ESP TA-200 bass. It feels quite nice but I think the action is a little high.

My questions for you experts are....

1. what is involved in a "set-up"?
2. what are the things I should try adjusting myself and what should I leave to the experts?

3. How does one become an expert because it is something I would like to learn more about?

thanks

The first step in answering your question is to read the sticky posts at the top of the Hardware and Repair forum.

When you've gone through the links there, you will be well equipped with answers about what a setup is and how to do it.

To become an expert - read everything you can get your hands on (both print and online), become a student of the process, do a few hundred setups on all types of instruments, and you will eventually get there.

Sight down the neck from body toward headstock. If you see anything more then a slight hint of curve/bow a trussrod adjustment is needed. After that its simply a matter of adjusting the individual bridge saddles as desired for lowest action as desired for each string. Nice bass btw.
