Help with quick neck refinishing

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently acquired a used T-40 neck to put on my Fury body. It had been quite abused by the previous owner(s), but was straight and the truss rod works.

I had to sand off glued-on labels and note names scratched into the back of the neck! Of course by the time I get the neck smooth I am through the finish.

What is the fastest and easiest way to put some finish on the back of the neck? A few coats of poly sanded smooth, oil finish or ?? I don't care about the appearance, just that it is properly sealed and comfortable to play.

Thanks, experts.

Tru Oil would work well. Very easy to apply but it does take quite a few coats and you need to let it dry at least two hours between coats.

I think Tru-Oil is the way to go (it's a gun stock oil finish that's easy to find at most sporting goods stores or your local Wal Mart). The coats are thin and easily applied by hand. You can buff to a shine or leave smooth satin. You can even add a little amber dye for a very cool vintage color.

Minwax spray satin clear works great - I've used it on many neck refins.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. Yeah - I am sure that a satin finish is required (and preferred).

+1 for Tru Oil and then the gunstock wax after it's fully dried and lightly buffed. This is how the Musicman Stingray necks are finished.

The Tru-Oil looks great - thanks guys.

There is a video of someone using it and it looks perfect.

If this one turns out well (and why shouldn't it) I will re-do the neck on my '67 Hagstrom. I still cannot believe that I was so careless with it over the years to let it get so dinged up.

Thanks again.

Be advised that the Tru-Oil will harden on the neck, similar to a varnish, so use it sparingly. Wipe it on, leave it a few minutes, then wipe it off.

3-4 super-thin coats with a #0000 steel wool rub out betweenst applications works best IMO.
