dyiy fret work costs money and time learning. It's easier to take it to a good tech.

Yeah, if you care about and play that bass, its no place to learn these skills. Pay a pro to do it.

If you want to learn, buy a cheap MAPLE neck, nut blanks, fretwire and tools to learn with. The maple neck will stand up fairly well to removing and replacing frets a couple of times as you learn, you got it cheap so you don't care about chewing it up filing the ends, etc.

You need a fret leveling. Dressing is what you do after that.

It's not that hard to do. But it is also not that hard to completely F it up big time to the point of being unplayable.

I agree with others, if you don't know what you are doing take it somewhere to have it done. Or, get a cheap neck to practice on and check out some good links online showing how it's done.

Google "fret leveling".

right, and besides, the problem may not even be the frets; it could just be other setup issues, like a backbowed neck.

Yeah: find out what the problem is, before you rip into your bass.

It sounds more like it needs a good setup. Do that first then determine if there any more serious issues during the setup process. If you don't feel confident in your setup and troubleshooting skills take it to a pro.
