That's the part that holds the snake gear in place.

This is precisely the reason I have stopped using Schaller "vintage" type tuners. The spring shim design used in these tuners is the worst quality possible. All of the cheap tuners like you see on SX's are done the same way. It's actually a cost saving measure because the tuner can be reversed for left hand use without having to make a different chassis for it. I now use the Gotoh vintage style tuners that have the worm gear shaft attached permanently to the chassis and is a better fit and finish than the Schaller. Eventually, these spring shims will loose their tension and let the worm gear loosen. They also grind against the gear shaft and will eventually shed a metal dust all over the back of the headstock.

All in all, Schaller has taken a definite dip in quality from what they used to make. Now, while Schaller cheapens it's line, Gotoh makes the "Schaller" version better than Schaller!

Well actually these tuners i put on my geddy bass, these schallers are from like the early 90's,so there not new,but the shims are actually pretty strong and only the chrome on the shim came off,the medal underneath is ok,but i think there better then the geddy original ones,i like the old german made schallers.
