Help in setting up my own basses

Sign in to disble this ad
ok, so basically I'm deciding for this new year, I don't want to deal with a tech ever again. I'm sick of the idea that some guy who doesn't know me gets to even things out, put on a new pack of strings on my instrument, and charge me anywhere from 50-80 dollars to even things out, and then for me to get disgruntled when I sit down playing that things don't feel right when I actually getting time to play.

To start off with, I want to learn:
1. How to adjust my trussrod without fear for ****ing up the whole neck. My basses may be a little out of whack. My father's new (and first) bass is a nightmare. The electronics are ok, so that's one plus, but the neck is in desperate need of adjustment. Its a five string made by Grand with a plexiglass body. Looking where the body meets the neck and the distance between with the strings, we're looking at 2 full centimeters width. That and with all the damn alt-rockers in every other band I'm finding tunings of DROP-C, B STANDARD, DROP-A, and who knows the hell else. And I'm playing my regular four strings. In standard. Nuff said.
2. Proper bridge adjustment. I've had my problems with strings that were too low, too high, or jsut plain not easy to play the way I want to.

I've had a deep falling out with bass for the past couple years, thanks to friends and bandmates that have decided waste my time, or nitpick what it is I want to play. Almost all I do now is electronic music........which is at times the only thing I want to do because I think its the only thing that will take me anywhere without having to rely on actual people. But I really wish I could fall back in love with bass, and just having an instrument properly set up is too important to scoff at.

Help

Gary Willis' setup manual is online and is a pretty good starting point. Check it out:

Go to the top of the page. Find the sticky that states: All Basic Setup Questions Answered Here. Follow the links. They are simple and the instructions are easy to follow.

The link to the Gary Willis page is long gone from this sticky, for good reason. It is filled with inaccuracies and only serves to confuse the uninitiated and infuriate the pros.
