Help with string action

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok bear with me because I'm new lol. I just got a new ESP bass and was wondering how I can tell if the string action could be lowered. I use standard strings and usually standard tuning but sometimes I use Drop D or even DGDG tuning.
I called the only music shop around here (I live in the boonies) and they want $30 for me to leave my bass and let them adjust it. That seems pointless since I might not even like their adjustment. So, without any real knowledge or any special equipment, is there an easy way I can tell if I could (or should) lower my string action? Or should I just leave it alone if it feels ok and since it is new from the factory.
Also, if I do decide to lower the action, what's the best way to be sure I get the strings at the same height?
Thanks for any help...and for putting up with my ignorance lol.

Advice on site already

Go to bass guitar forums => setup and repair=> Action and TrussRod section. Great links there to let you know how to make the decision. If you've not done this before and you love your instrument, and you trust the guys doing it, then $30 sounds ok to me. If you want to get more independent and take some risks then check the links and follow the advice.
