Help w/ frets

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, guys -
It's my first new thread posted, so be gentle...
I recently picked up a Brice Douglas Jazz Bass 5 on e-bay ($200). I love it, except that the frets have seen better days. There's plenty of life left in 'em (they're pretty honkin' BIG), but they seem to almost have corroded a bit (yellowish green in color!). They obviously need to be cleaned up a bit, so I was thinking of taking a stab at it myself.
I know there have been some posts about taping up the fretboard (mine is gloss maple w/ black block inlays), and using steel wool, but if someone could run through the process for me with specific details (ex: exactly what type/number of steel wool to use, etc.) I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

First, remove the strings. Then tape up the fingerboard so that just the frets are exposed (this will take longer than the actual cleaning process). Also, cover the pickups to prevent the steel wool from adhering to them (magnets! - you get the picture).

Then, using 0000 steel wool, rub them frets til they shine. I recommend that you then remove the tape. Everyone forgets to mention this step.

You can also use Brasso and a cotton cloth. It cleans gunk and polishes to a mirror shine.
