HELP... Weird overtones/harmonics on stingray 5

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently purchased a MM SR5 and I noticed that when you hit the higher frets on the A, E, and B strings I get a strange chorus sound, it even happens when I'm unplugged. Any help would be great, thanks

Try reducing your pickup height to lower. I had that problem once and it was the pickups pulling on the string causing that. It is an easy test to see. Good luck

Thanks for the reply, but I already tried reducing it to the lowest it could be. And I think its weird because it also happens acoustically

Yeah, so did mine as the pickups had an effect plugged in or not. It was worth a try since it fixed mine. I will have to subscribe as now I am curious what it ends up being. You have new strings?

I just had the bass setup about a week ago, I did change the strings but even before I changed them, they still made that sound, although both sets were Ernie balls, the first set was regular slinkies and the current set is super slinkies, should I try changing brands, tapered or non-tapered? What do you think?

I ran into that problem with someone that I'm teaching. Earlier today actually lol. She was playing an acoustic bass and I kept hearing all sorts of weird overtones from her bass. We narrowed it down to her fingerstyle technique (she was using her thumb and needed more speed so I was pushing her to use fingerstyle) She was plucking the strings diagonally against the winds of the strings producing a ring and could have actually been on a harmonic point now that I think about it..... But we fixed it and its all good now.

Lightbulb

i figured out the problem, when i lowered the pickups i only lowered the bridge pickup because that was the one that i was using, but it was the neck pickup that was actually pulling the string. lol, i dont know why i didnt think of lowering the neck pickup..... but thanks for the help.
