Help! What happened to my Epi JC?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks. I went to do a truss rod adjustment today (Florida weather changes) on my Epiphone Jack Casady and found this. I can't swear but I am almost positive this is a recent development. What is going on here? Could it have fallen (I do have teenagers in the house constantly)....? Should it be repaired?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

"I do have teenagers in the house constantly"

Is the bass left out for all to see and touch, or is it "out of sight - out of mind?"

Well buddy, I can almost guarantee that didn't just happen by itself.

My guess is it definitely took a fall, and the teens are keepin' quiet about it - hahaha

Take it in and get it fixed...leaving it like that will only lead to further problems...that fingerboard looks like its coming right off the neck soon....probably best for now to keep the strings a bit loose, so there's less pull on the neck.

On a stand in living room by amp. Sometimes. I won't point the finger directly, since it is possible they didn't do it. They have their own instruments anyway, there are guitars and basses elsewhere around the house.

Fix it by yourself. Just put that string on its place.

That, and Gibson's well known QC, which I know can't be any better for their off-shore line...

Hi.

I have repaired a few instruments, including Epi's that had a separating FB, very close like on the pics you've taken. Those didn't have the chips fallen off from the headstock though.

AFAIK, none of them had fallen or knocked around badly enough to cause that kind of damage. On one, the TR was lifting the FB, on others the glue line just separated because of the different expansion rates of the different woods. Ie. crappy manufacturing.
IIRC, the country of origin didn't play a role, an neither did the year of mfg.

I'd ask a luthier to inspect the instrument, since You have to take it in anyway, he'll find out whether there's signs of a fall or not.

Regards
Sam

Thanks for the replies, folks. I called a local luthier earlier in the week but he hasn't returned my call (he's well known). So if I don't hear back from him by early in the week, I'll take it to my other go-to guy. I'll post a follow up when the issue is resolved, however that happens.
