I havnt had this problem before on 10 different basses and around 20 guitars (sorry if that sounds big headed), but I guess you only need to get it wrong once for it to suck. If it were me I would just do it carefully, there shouldnt really be that much force involved, but that is probably the lamest advice you have been given on TB. Do you have a set of calipers maybe to measure the size?
