High Action?

Sign in to disble this ad
The action on my Schecter Studio-5 seems terribly high.

or maybe i'm just used to my fender's action..

Anyway, on the 12th fret,
The B string is a little more than 3/8 off the board, but less than 1/2.

Is that too high? (its a neck-thru bass with a non-screw adjustable bridge)

High Action-

If you hailed from the north, I'd suggest that its watering time. By that, I mean that after a winter of dry heat actually shrinking wood by cooking the moisture out of it, we are now in the beginning of the humid "rehydrating" of wood. As it pertains to basses, the action moves down and up with this cycle. This is most pronounced with double basses.

Is you ax new, or been relocated? It just needs a set up.

Wow. Although I no longer own any Schecters, the ones I used to own were capable of crazy low action. Sounds like something is wrong. You're measuring 3/8ths of an inch from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string at the 17th fret?

No, from the top of the fretboard to the bottom of the string.

I do not understand.

The bridge cannot be adjusted for some reason?

The bridge does not have screws to turn to adjust the action.

So it's a fretless bass?
If it's a fretted bass the correct way to measure is from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string. I keep my basses (including my schecters when I had them) at about 5/64 at the 17th fret. That's a little bit higher than 1/16. Which is pretty low action.
You might want to checkout some of the setup guides in the sticky posts at the top of this forum or get a good tech to set up your bass for you. That bass should be able to be set up with nice low action.
Good luck and hope you can get it set up the way you want it.

Different bridge from what mine had but I'll bet there are two set screws on top of each string saddle that raise and lower the string.
At this point I'd suggest taking it to a good tech (maybe where you bought it) and have him show you how to set up your bass.

From the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the B string its between 3/8" to 1/2"? Yes I would say somethings wrong. "High action" would be considered in the 3/16 + range.
