Talking High Action and Low Action

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this has come up before, but the last time anyone relpied to those threads was in 2007

Bass-ically, do you prefer high action or low action?
And this may sound stupid, but what is all the millimetre stuff about? Is that how tall the saddle is or something?

If it's any constellation, I have my Yamaha RBX765A at high action... it was just clunky before, not really much sound coming from the amp other than the sound of the string crashing against the fretboard.

I like it to be as low as I can get away with (ie as low as I can go without fret buzz).

Millimeter refers to how far the string is above the fret. I believe they use the 12th fret for this measurement.

For me, the test I do (for neck relief) is I hold down the 1st fret, and the highest fret (say, 24th or whatever it is). With those pushed down, I want just enough room between the fret and the string at the 12th fret that a credit card just slips in.

I play hard with a pick so I need high action (3mm E & A, 2.5mm D&G) otherwise I get too much fret clank.
