High pitched "ringing" when playing slap?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got an L-2000 from another TB member. Everything seems to function normally, except I noticed that when playing slap style, or otherwise with a very hard attack, one can hear a high pitched, harmonic-sounding tone ringing out. The previous owner says he never heard anything like that when he owned it. I've checked and every metal part seems to be bolted down tightly. I'm no good at troubleshooting though, and google hasn't been to helpful. Any idea what might be the problem?

Does it stop when you move away from the amp?

does it happen with the bass unplugged or does it only come through the amp?

I can definitely hear some similar noises unplugged, but they mostly seem to be different frequencies. I think the same frequency/frequencies as I hear when plugged in are there, but more subtle.

I just eliminated about 70% of the ringing by tightening the pickup screws a bit. Anyone have enough technical knowledge to explain what might have been going on, and how I might be able to fully alleviate it? The bridge pickup still appears to have a couple millimeters of room to be tightened but the screws don't wanna budge too much.

I'll take a wild guess: it's coming from the springs that support the pickups. Remove them and replace them with model airplane fuel tubing, available at any hobby store.

ive had this issue with some old fenders. it took forever to figure out it was the tuners. they werent loose at all but if you flicked the tuning key it sounded like a tuning fork. with a hard attack, that frequency would ring out. i had my repair guy flow some solder in there and it fixed the issue
