Hipshot A, Fender HMV - To shim or not to shim?

I've come across quite a few posts stating that BAII's and Gotoh 201's require a shim to get the action down low enough. What has been your experience with Hipshot A style and Fender HMV bridges?

Can you get the action down low on a Fender without shimming the neck?

The answer is: use a shim if the instrument needs it.

There is NO single answer for Fender or any other brand. Some basses simply require shims - others do not.

Some people seem to think there's something wrong with any instrument which requires a shim - I strongly disagree.
