I use Chromes with a hipshot on my Jazz. My E string is a .100. I need to adjust the D before every gig, but I consider that normal pre gig tuning. I haven't had any real issues. When the strings were new, I could see having those issues you speak of because the windings on the post of the tuner hadn't settled in yet. I found that this was more of an issue with flats than rounds. Are your strings new?

Was the nut filed to the size of the new string?

I experienced the same thing when I first switched to Chromes on my Ray. Had to fiddle with the detuner quite regularly. It seems to have finally subsided though. Give it a chance to let everything settle in....

I've got Lakland Joe Osborn flats (the medium gauge ones, I think it's a 0.106) on my Precision. Same strings on there for over five years, and the Hipshot (which has been on this bass since at least 1987) has always worked fine with the flats.

Same as with rounds, make sure you've eliminated friction at the nut (I use powdered graphite everytime I restring), there's a very small bit of lube on the plates of the detuner (Park bicycle grease is my choice, but that's mostly 'cause I always have some of it around), and the string is settled in. I haven't had to fiddle with the adjustments on mine in years.

Thanks for the answers.

The strings are a month old/new, and i think i should take a closer look at the nut.

I had similar issues when I switched to the rotosound rs88 flats. I tightened the screws on the detuner itself and it started acting normal again.
