So I've been hearing that you can switch which side of the headstock a Hipshot Ultralite tuner goes on. But after taking one apart, I found that mine (a four string Victor Bailey set) seemingly do not have that ability. Is there a trick to doing this or is the Victor Bailey set made to not change sides? Did this paragraph make sense to anyone other than myself? Thanks! |

When you pull the main tuning head out after removing the gear, the hole on the other side of the plate that holds everything together is not large enough to fit the tuning head shaft through on that side. Hard to describe, but a picture would hopefully clear things up. I'll upload a picture soon. |

He took them completely apart, and sat there trying to figure out why Hipshot would change the design; then he blamed Victor Bailey and gave up. I think I'll just give Hipshot a call and see if my only option is to buy two different tuners. |

The side that doesn't fit (hard to see, but you can tell there's a lip, and a smaller hole in the lip on that side) :

Does not fit | Looks like what you have there is a Hipshot Licensed Ultralite tuner, not the genuine US-made product which is indeed ambidextrous. The lic'd Hipshots are found on quite a few import basses (including the Sadowsky Metro line!) and, overall, are pretty decent. I just tore one apart and they cannot be converted so you're pretty much hosed.

Despite the apparent limitations, they are very close in quality to their US-made cousins. There are several subtle design differences between the two but shouldn't hinder your project.

The only reason I bought these at all was because they were going for a rather low price on the 'bay. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
