Hipshot Ultralites Lighter than Gotohs on an Ibanez Premium?

Anyone know if Hipshot Ultralite tuners are lighter than the Gotohs that come stock on an Ibanez Premium bass? If so, do you know how much?

Thanks.

PS...after searching here and at the company websites and beyond, I can't find the info.

Why don't you just get the lightweight version of the Gotohs?

Yes, much lighter and great machines, but I couldn't tell you the exact weight difference. However I find the upper end Ibanez hardware to be pretty good and I don't believe they are neck-heavy at all, so not sure if that's an "upgrade" I'd pursue on that instrument.

The 1205 I have is neck-heavy. I'd like to keep it but have to address the issue to have it be better balanced.

I've put Hipshot Ultra-Lites on a number of basses that were neck heavy and it always made a huge difference. Most of them had Gotoh tuners. Right now I have three 6 string and a 4 string with them. I have a couple of others I want to put them on. They are great tuners and will cure the neck dive most of the time.

Thanks for the replies!

I've investigated and the Hipshots are 44g and the Gotoh GB350 is 40g. If I replace the stock tuners with the GB350, I lop-off 1/4 lb. from the headstock. With the lever, this probably will help. From my testing, I need 1 lb more on the body to balance the bass. Not sure if the 1/4 lb saving at the headstock with the lever calculates to the same as adding a pound to the body, but it's a good first try.

So are the hipshot tuners not the only 'light weight' ones out there?

AndroWal 02-09-2013 01:11 PM

Gotoh GB350s are even lighter. 4g lighter each than the Ultralites.

Do you think there is a difference between the different hipshots?( Clover leaf, lollipop, 'Y')?

Check the Hipshot website but, to the best of my recollection, the "Y" version is the lightest and style-wise would be the best fit for your bass. The stock Ibanez tuners appear to be Gotoh GB7's. If they were installing the Res-o-lites as standard equipment, I'm sure they'd be making a big deal of it in the literature.

A standard paperclip weighs one gram IIRC.
