I put a Hipshot Vintage Bridge, purchased from Bass Parts Resource, on my MIM Precision last night. In my opinion, it should be considered a real contender in the replacement bridge category, up there with Badass and Gotoh.
I am skeptical about whether changing bridges makes any real change in sound, and I didn't notice much here. Maybe a little longer sustain, but that could just be in my head.
The bridge is a little more solid feeling than the MIM standard bridge, maybe a little thicker metal. It has a more solid, precise feel to it. The strings won't move side to side on this one, as the outer two barrels sit in grooves. If you really smack your strings, they won't move.
It looks really good on the Precision; the rounded contour in the back fits the rounded P shape nicely. Far better looking IMO than the Badass or Gotoh. It looks a little on the bass like Lakland's bridges, just not as huge.
String changes are easier, as this is a top loader. This is mostly why I bought it. My wife hates the sound of the strings being pulled through the little holes in a standard bridge, and I always am afraid of scratching the heel of the bass. Not here.
One caveat; you need a tiny .050 allen wrench to adjust string height. This size is not on standard allen wrench keys, or in standard allen wrench packs. I went to Sears and bought one for 3.49. Hipshot should include one, as it is not a common size. |
