Hole in the top of tuners?

What exactly is the string doing on my fender tuners when it is going inside a hole on top of the tuner? How does it get there?

while stringing your bass, pull the string through the bridge and pull tight. clip the string at about two peg lengths further then peg it is going to be wrapped around. then just put the tip of the string into the hole and hold the string down with your finger just in front of the tuning peg. set the string in the bridge and nut and tune her up while keeping pressure on the string. enjoy a very neatly strung up instrument with no sharp string ends and no coiled up strings flopping around!

I've gotten into the habit of bending a sharp 90 degrees before cutting. I think DR recommends this to keep the windings tight.

Thanks--that's exactly what I needed to know. I'm so used to guitar tuners I was confused!
