How to "buff" out etched ID info???

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Rick and it has some ID numbers etched into the handles of the tuning pegs from the previous owner for (I assume), theft identification purposes. I was wondering the best way to "buff" them out without really ruining the tuning handles on the bass. Thoughts?

There aren't too many good ways to do this, especially if you don't want to hurt your tuners. I'd say you might be able to melt some solder into the numbers, but that also could go really wrong really fast.

In my estimation, I'd say learn to live with it or buy new tuners, as anything you do to those posts will only look worse than the way they are now.

Surely if they're theft identification it's a good idea? I mean, what if it does get stolen? You could prove it's yours.. Unless whoever stole it changed the tuners

Okay, everybody; I'll come clean.
Seems that when I was young and STUPID, I bought a Rick and then someone I knew had an etching tool, so I thought it would be a good idea to put an ID # on the bass so I could identify it if it got stolen. Well, STUPID me, I used my Soc Sec #! So it's all over the bass. I'd REALLY like to get them off there before I do anything with it, as you could well understand.

There. I've said it. The first step to recovery is admitting there's a problem!

It's my bass. I just don't want anyone else to get hold of the number, and I was hoping to rectify the situation without totally replacing the tuners.

I did just see some tuners out on Ebay, but I kept getting out-bid, so I gave up for now. I think there's someone out there that really wants them; must have a high proxy bid in. I think I'll keep looking. That might just be the best way to go. Doesn't look too hard to swap them out...

Well, glad I could put a smile on your face. Thanks for the replys.
