How to buy & mount thumb rest for Fender Jazz bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I finally got my sunburst MIA Jazz Bass V, and I ordered the tortoise shell pick guard from Fender to replace the original white.

Can I buy the little thumb rest and then mount it on the new pick guard? How much do they cost, and is it hard/potentially damaging to mount these on the pick guard?

Thanks.

Re. Your questions on Fender Thumbrests

Hi!

One source for Fender Thumbrests is at Musicians' Friend. I recently bought 3 of these and the price was $5.95 each + shipping. The Fender P/N for the thumbrests is 099-2036-000.

I plan to mount one of the thumbrests on a highly modified Fender 5 string jazz bass that I own which has a tortoise pickguard. The thumbrests mount with two screws which are long enough to (if necessary) go right through the pickguard and into the body of the bass. I don't see this as a problem as long as you CAREFULLY assess where you want to mount the thumbrest. Clearly you would want to avoid a mounting location that is over a cavity where active electronics, potentiometers, are housed, etc.

A Fender customer service person kindly sent me a couple of
diagrams that indicate the general area where the thumbrests are mounted. If you would care to send me your e-mail address, I'll gladly forward copies of the diagrams to you.

Absolutely gorgeous instrument, man. What did you come up with to put on the headstock? I can tell that it says something, but I can't make out what it is.

For my taste, I would play it without the pup cover on it so that I could rest my thumb on the pickup. If I had to keep the pup cover on there, then the extra thumb rest would be a must. JMHO.

i just recently did this. i picked one up at the store for $5, dug up a pick of a vintage jazz bass, took out a drill and a 5/32" bit, lined up where i wanted the rest, marked it, drilled one hole, put in the one screw, then drilled another hole with the thumbrest already on, put in the second screw, and that was it! 5 mins
