How can I repair this Paint Chip easily

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a squier special off of ebay for a backup 5 string, and to have to practice simple modding and setup (pickup swap, maybe setup and tuners etc)

I just got it out of the box and there is a big paint chip on the top/ back of the bass, if I leave it alone it seems like it will keep chipping away. What can I do to simply seal the chip and maybe paint over the grey primer.

Well if it's a bass that you don't care about, sand the whole thing down and paint it the color of your choice. I have an Ibanez gio that im completely rebuilding and it had a similar problem, but on the front and it was very noticeable and made the bass look like crap.

I do like the purple color of it... and the rest of the finish is in great shape. I'm just looking for something simple to get rid of the grey and seal up the crack so it doesnt get worse

You might try nail polish as a temp fix/cover-up. Worked for me, but my body is basic black and easy to match the color.

You could put a sticker on it. I cover dents on my electric guitar with stickers.

This is a trick I've used...find a felt pen that is the same color and then put some superglue in the crack until it fills the hole...its not perfect but I've done it lots of times.

I've used clear coat nail polish to seal chips on my basses. It won't fix the exposed grey but it will keep it from spreading. Looks like there's nothing there if you're not up close

Yes, fill the crack with superglue to weld the edges down. I would custom mix a paint that matches the body and fill the chip in with that and then put some clear sealant over it.

+1

If you plan to do quite a few fixes here and there, get your hands on some extra thin CA glue (super glue). You can get it at stewmac, but you can also find it in hardware stores. The very thin stuff will suck under the chip as far as there's space, so you can get really good adhesion. But to fill the area, like marty was suggestion, go back to normal thickness, and build it up with several layers. Or you can drop varnish in and build that up, and when the fill is a bit higher than the surrounding paint, you can sand and buff it all down. Won't be flawless/invisible, but will be solid and will look fine from a few feet away.

And that will give you loads of practice in sanding, buffing, repeating...a process that is slow and that improves as you get more and more practice at it!

Never tried it but how about going to your local drug store and buying some nail polish in that colour? Just a crazy thought.
