I've been less-than-impressed with the DIY remedies suggested. Although the bass takes on a nice sheen, the scratches usually remain. A well-equipped luthier may be able to assist provided he has a huge industrial buffing wheel and whatever rubbing compound is required. If you attempt this at home, be careful. Its easy to overheat or rub-through the clearcoat in the process.

I've heard of people getting good results from a product called Scratch-X followed by an application of Zymol. I've never tried it myself, but if I ever feel I need to, that's plan A.

Unless it's some $4000 boutique bass, leave the scratches. They build character on a bass/guitar, and show that you're a bassist, not a rich collector that doesn't even play.

To quote a topic from ages ago (not sure who said it):

A bass with no scratches is like a man without scars: a sissy with no life experience.
