It's great video for a basic understanding of how a trussrod operates.

That guy sure said the word "guess" a few too many times in context to knowing when the neck is in proper form.

Oh and I could be way off base here but shouldn't the neck be adjusted with all of the strings tuned to pitch?

Actually, if tightening, it's "easier on the neck" to have the strings loosened a bit, or to put some back pressure on the neck to help the truss rod tighten.

Often/Most of the time it's fine... but it helps, and people like to fret and worry about the necks of their instruments. :-)

I agree. Carruthers is doing it properly. But just remember that the actual measurements he uses are a reasonable average. Your playing style may require different amounts.

I like people who try to teach. There's one thing, however, which should be sayed: The truss rod is not being screwed into the neck. It is being tightened.

The bass music in the original vid is enough to make me wanna dig out my eardrums with a teaspoon.....not to mention he spent 7.5 minutes to show you, if it is front bowed, tighten the truss rod, if it is back bowed, loosen the truss rod.

Check out the Galazio Frudua clips on YouTube for setups. He's very informative.

Lakland Bass Setup With Carl Pedigo (Part 1 of 2) - YouTube

Here's a Youtube vid of the Lakland head tech Carl Pedigo doing it at pitch. I think I would go with his advice so you can actually determine what is happening with each adjustment. Carl doesn't say "I guess" in his vids, he knows. He also doesn't adjust a bass sitting on the floor, leaning against a couch.

If you want instruction, try typing a brand name of a bass in your Youtube search, lots of companies have vids of qualified persons adjusting instruments.

Absolutely, but being an English speaking Canadian, I prefer advice from guys named CARL!

Second that.

Opinions may differ, but I have followed Carruthers step by step on my basses and they sure play well now! Some needed a bit more adjustment than others, but even a little adjustment here and there made positive difference.

I know a lot of us are unsure of how to do a setup properly and Carruthers' videos could maybe be made as a sticky. They are very informative and easy to understand.
