How do you remove finish from frets on warmoth neck ??

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm considering warmoth neck and body for my project bass, and I'm going to go with finished maple neck and maple fretboard.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences on how to remove the finish from the frets by yourself ?

One method I read about and tried myself if to take a nail with a flat head and file a round notch in the head to fit the contour of the fret. Use it as a scraper to scrape the finish off the fret. It worked good for me, but be careful not to let the corners of the notch scrape the wood next to the fret.

I'd use one of those little fretboard guards Stew-Mac sells with a slot down the center for your fret, plus your abrasive tool of choice, perhaps working lightly with a file.

Can I use steelwool ??

I wouldn't worry about the fretboard guard as I can make it one my self from an aluminium plate.

Or steel wool & tape up the board. Should do the trick!

It comes off during the fret leveling/polishing process as normal. You are really supposed to do this to ANY aftermarket neck. The frets MIGHT be all level, but these are all raw fret jobs, except for beveling of the ends.
