How do you take care of a fretless fingerboard while playing roundwounds?

Is there any way to treat/repair/touch-up ect a fretless fingerboard to fix damage done by roundwounds? I wonder what Jaco did...

If the scratches are in the wood then sanding is the only way to fix it. Jaco put marine epoxy on his fingerboard so the scratches were in the epoxy not the wood. And judging by the rest of his bass, Jaco didn't seem to mind a scratch or two (hundred).

Ha indeed. He did take care of the neck though, since that affects how the bass plays. As for the body, he probably dropped it a few times. Do you have the Modern Electric Bass DVD? At the end of the first jam at the end he unstraps his bass and throws it to the drummer lol.
