How to get rid of buzz on a single fret?

Sign in to disble this ad
Yesterday i took my bass to the Celinder Workshop to get my bass set up.
He also changed my DR highbeams to a set Labella nylon strings.

I went home and everything was perfect, the DR strings went back on, because i had to practice something. but when i put the labellas back on again, i had alot of fretbuzz on the third fret of the E-string.

How do i get rid of it?

Thanks.

If the string has developed a kink in it, you only need to replace the string. You may be able to reduce the buzz some by putting a twist in the string at the bridge, too.

If there's a fret that's too low, that's harder, you'll need to either relax the trussrod and get some curve in the neck (giving you a higher action) or get the frets dressed. Try the strings idea first!

The trussrod is a lot easier to adjust than the fret dress, which basically needs to be done by a professional, but that'll take your action up everywhere and is not preferable in terms of playability.

Oh, and you might want to wait more than 6 minutes before bumping....

I've had problems like this when I changed brands one time. I usually use Sadowsky blue label stainless steel strings but tried some Elrick strings, same gauge and everything, but the Elricks seemed to have a little more tension. It caused my neck to develop a slight bow and I had fret buzz on the first 5 frets on the D and G strings. I took it to a luthier and he set it up multiple times until my neck straightened out. He finally told me that the Sadowsky SS strings were better for my particular bass. He also mentioned that even though some strings may have the same structural make up, same materials, and are the same gauge, they still are different strings and may have different effects on a sensitive neck or a neck made of softer wood.

If I were you I'd stick to what your bass likes. Some strings just don't mix well with certain basses and some work perfectly.

Was it there before the strings where changed? Was it there after you got it back from the set up? Or did it just happen when you rechanged the strings? From your desrciption, you have a bad string. I would try a new string and go from there.

I've built a bass from rough lumber club #2 (I'm pretty sure).

Wink temp changes

i'm in the middle of buying/building ONE Matsumoko P bass out of 2,,when i strung up first with some old Fender Supers(roundwound) i had a buzz on one fret then today i swapped on some chromes=same buzz,,bagged it and put it in th bedroom(out of the COLD shop),,tonight my buddy showed and i whupped her out=buzz gone!,,,i AM going to polish the frets,,,if there's a high one i'll use some 1200/1500 grit`colorsanding' paper to work out any`highs' along with ALL the frets being massaged,,lay some masking tape along every fret and use 1500/2000 grit wetsanding paper then `rubbing compound)

i guess the pros use a file but i'm not a pro,i'd rather sand than file,i also won't stand for a buzzy fret, one out of the whole neck?,,,it happens,,i like a tight setup, fret buzz is somthing you'll have to contend with as you`get down',you'll either have to farm it out(wait) or learn how to fix it yourself(i don't have time or patience to wait)hence i'm figuring it out myself===put some heat on her!

buzz on 3rd fret

According to this Gary Willis setup manual http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass...tupmanual.html if the buzz is in the first 5 frets you need to loosen the truss rod a bit. Definitely try this before filing or sanding the frets!
