How to know the right saddle gauge?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone,

I bought new strings (050-105) for my bass (discontinued 4-strings Jay Turser), that used to have 045-100.
All went well except that when I slap the forth string it makes a buzz that come from the bridge, so I've come to the conclusion that my forth saddle is not large enough to fit the string properly.

I want to buy a saddle on the internet but I can't figure which size would fit my string gauge;
how to know the right saddle gauge?

Thank you for your answers!

I highly doubt a change in guage of 100-105 is significant enough, but I don't know anything about the Jay Turser products - maybe there's something unique there.

Sometimes, a bad string can cause bizarre vibrations. If you can, swap your .105 for another .105 and see if the problem persists.

Try pushing down on the string just in front of where it touches the saddle (called the witness point) and make sure the string is properly seated in the groove of the saddle.

If the saddle height is adjusted by set screws or the like... make sure they are both tight to the body of the bridge.

sorry, wrong conclusion.

your saddle may be sliding around or rattling, but the size of the string groove has nothing to do with it.

Could also be ringing spring causing it. Saddles done need replaced for diff gauges. Theyre made to work fine with the whole range of string gauges for each string.
