How long for a newly built/setup bass to "settle" before final tweaking?

Sign in to disble this ad
I received my new parts bass today. It was assembled/setup by someone else. Unfortunately, the neck shifted in transit, so I had to loosen the neck screws, move the neck and retighten. So far everything looks to be in order but the action needs to be lowered.

It's been in transit and the neck's been "off". How long should I let it sit at room temp (at concert tuning of course) before doing "final tweaking?" I will be playing it in during this "settling in time." Just looking for some guidance. Thanks.

Mike

No more than a few minutes is necessary, if any time at all.

What do you mean? Put them together and you get:

"At least a few minutes, but no more than a few days." Narrows it down quite a bit...

Thanks guys. I was figuring at least a week or so. So far, I'm at more than a few minutes, but less than a few days. Guess I'm doing well.

The neck shifting is trivial - takes 90 seconds to loosen screws, move the neck and re-secure it. Doesn't speak well for the previous owner that he/she didn't secure the neck more firmly.

I'd say once it has sat with full string tension overnight, you're good to do anything you need to. There's absolutely nothing about that bass needs to 'settle in" other than the neck responding to the tension of the strings.

You don't need a few days - just overnight.

I'd generally just wait 15 minutes, but overnight is good if you have the time. I agree that anything more than a day is probably too much.

Roger that. Thanks very much. I must admit I got a little scared to see the neck moved like that...didn't think that was supposed to happen in transit. The bass was well-padded, but the whole "padded package" was too small for the box it was in. You could see how it could move around a lot. No damage to the bass though, other than the shifted neck.

I have successfully realigned the neck; all is well. I will wait a day or two for it to settle, then I'll tweak the action. Thanks again everyone.
