How low can I make my frets?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a MIM Fender Jazz bass that I brought to a guitar tech. The frets were completely uneven. He did a decent job of evening out the frets but there are still a few that are too high that cause fret buzz and the strings to stop dead. I've been doing a lot of research and I'm going to try evening out the the uneven frets on my own. Once they're even, I want try lowering all of the frets.

Is there is a limit how low I can get the frets before they will stop producing a nice tone?

imo,I'd go with mandolin fret-type dimensions, like Dingwall Basses.

He did a decent job of evening out the frets but...

I beg to differ: that's a lousy job of leveling the frets. Firmly request your money back, and find someone who knows what they're doing. You don't, and the possibilities of disaster are looming ahead.

+1, although I actually won't discourage you from taking apart your own bass. But you COULD screw it up pretty bad, just so you know. But DO get your money back and don't go back to that guy.

+3 get your money back and either take it to someone who knows what they're doing, or be extremely careful.

Agreed. A fret level that doesn't level your frets is worthless.

A fret level that isn't level isn't a fret level at all.

And worthless.

And of all the types of work you can do on your instrument.... fretwork is probably the most skill intensive repair there is.
