How to place individual string bridge units

Sign in to disble this ad
Guys...

I'm trying to work out how to measure for the correct placement of 6 individual string bridge units for 35" mod/build I'm playing with.

Obviously the treble strings will be shorter than the bass strings but by how much? Do I, for example, measure the 35" to the centre of the A/D strings then add a bit more for E and B, and subtract a bit for G and C? And if so, how much is that 'a bit'?

Sorry for the probably silly question, but wisdom appreciated as always.

Ta.

John

Hi John.

I haven't done any individual bridge installations, but overall it's the same as with a regular bridge.

I've noticed that the distance from the 12th fret to the saddle is approximately the distance from the 12th to the nut + the string thickness. Never have I encountered a properly cut neck that has the saddles nearer to the 12th than that.

The individuals still have some adjustment capability?
If that's the case, just measure the saddle places, (using the above or some different method) and line the bridges so You have about 1cm to adjust the intonation.

You can also consider the asthetics, a stepped installation may or may not clash with the rear contour of the body.

Regards
Sam

Make sure all the saddles are in the center of bridge so you can ajust in or out for intonation and follow T-Bird installation. The reason for the offset of the bridge is because most strings above the D (A-E-B ) needs to be more flat and will cause the saddle to be more behind one anothers. Look at some bass bridges that are set up and you will see what I mean.
