How to solder copper

Sign in to disble this ad
For whatever reason I can't solder my copper together for this shielding. I can get it to stick to one piece occasionally, but never two pieces and never consistently. Can anyone maybe walk me through the process to make sure I"m not missing something?

Try using a dab of flux on the surfaces you intend to solder. Also try using a wide flat tip on your iron.

+1 on the flux. Just make sure you clean up any left over flux residue after you're done soldering.

+2 on the flux, and make sure the iron is up to operating temperature before starting to solder.

Also, rough up the copper surface with sandpaper. This exposes clean metal.

Why are you trying to solder to copper shielding? What are you trying to connect?

All the pieces of shielding have to have continuity with each other. Some copper shielding doesn't have conductive adhesive, so you have to solder the pieces together.

Hi.

Most importantly: Are You sure it's even a semi decent copper (alloy)?

There's quite a bit of copper-like materials around to confuse the uneducated.

Even a lightly oxidized piece of copper is pretty easy to solder with quality rosin core solder, even better with extra flux as bongomania suggested.

Another thing is You'r iron, what's the wattage on that?

Regards

Re:

Soldering can be tricky & frightening, but it’s simple and understandable theoretically.
It’s technically identified as the procedure of joining metals by fusion & solidification of an adherent alloy.
