I do my own setup on my basses because im picky and i want to get it the way i want. On my MIM Jazz and SR5, i have a nice ratio between string height and fret buzz; its low enough to play fast but not too low that every note frets out.

However ive been playing around with my MM SUB for a good month or so, raising/lowering strings and adjusting the truss rod. But it always seems i get quite a bit of fret buzz with the action alot higher than that of the jazz and SR5. In particular, the E string gets an unreasonable amount of fretbuzz especially approaching 12th fret (from both ends of the neck)

Is there an obvious problem or something that I can do? Or should i maybe take it to be professionally set up?

I was having some problems along these lines. My action was really low on the first few frets, but no matter how I adjusted the trussrod i couldnt get the higher frets to have lower action. I just shimmed the neck up with some pieces of playing cards. Don't know if this would help in your situation, but its worth a try.

Could be that you have one or more high frets, or a loose fret. Use a short straight-edge, like a metal ruler, and see if you can figure out which one. It might just need to be glued down, or all the frets might need to be dressed. Basses don't always come from the factory with perfect frets, in fact some are pretty bad.
