An idea for a new project - How fesable would it be for me to pick up a squier affinity or standard p/j bass, defret it, put nice pickups in it etc.

Obviously the whole thing is physically possible, but would it be worth the money and time considering the woods that the guitars are made out of (i dont actually know what they are)

I've been toying with the idea of buying a bass to make my own for a while. Obviously this wouldnt be entirely possible if the body was made out of chipboard or something similar.

Also, could you tell me what kind of paints and stain to use for the finish, alongside a good highgloss laminate.

I would also like to replace the bridge and tuning machines.

Cheers for the help,
-Joe

I would go to www.warmoth.com, and slowly pick up pieces as budget allows. Now that would be worth the money and the effort

i agree with joeyl. But i have done what you're talking about. not necessarily with that idea in mind. but i had a squier and i defretted it and put a humbucker in it's bridge spot. Works good.
All depends on how much you have to spend i think.

see, what you wanna do is start from scratch, troll ebay and the classifieds here and find a finished body in your choice of color(or buy an unfinished warmoth, i cant reall tell form your post) clean it all up nice, etc. then gather up all the parts that you would need as they come available. you could buy used new what ever. see a BAII already slotted in the classifieds pick it up. buy some pickups, start collecting the electronics, buy some tuners, do it in steps, and then buy a fretless warmoth neck(unless youre dead set on defretting something) to finish up the project. or you could even buy a fender neck off of ebay or something, just make it a fun project to do, that will help you get exactly what you want.

well, I've not decided on colour or design yet - I really want to make it completely custom so from the outset, whatever I buy I'm gonna strip it down to the wood, so it would be nice to get an unfinished body - Do you know how much it would cost for me to get the body shipped to britain from warmoth?

I'll be looking around for some nice pickups etc. I was thinking either duncans or emg's. emg's would be quite hard to fit into the split coil cutout on a pbass body though.

How would I go about painting the body - what kind of paint should I use?

cheers,
-Joe

You might want to look at the Carvin Bolt kits too. I put one together a few years ago. I had a lot of fun putting on my choice of finish. It looks wonderful, sounds great even with stock pickups, and the neck is unbelievable. Good price too.
