So I have had my peavey cirrus bxp5 for about a year. The action on it was really high, so I took it to the local music shop and they said my truss rod needed to be tightened. So they tightened it for free b/c it only took like 5 minutes to do. Well I was practicing tonight and found this:
You can't really see it very well in the pic but there is a crack right where the head meets the neck. It is Y shaped. How bad am I screwed?

Those "techs" didn't know what they were doing, and may have messed up your bass a bit. At this point it doesn't look dire, but you should have that looked at by a COMPETENT tech. Go back, demand a refund, and take it somewhere else. |

Seriously????
JMaris
Like BS said, you're not screwed badly yet. Get a quote for repair from someone that has a brain in their heads then see if the store that messed it up will pay for it.

| | | | The action shouldn't be altered using the truss rod.
The truss rod is to change neck relief only ie, to add or reduce neck curve to stop fret buzz. The action should be lowered at the bridge. |

Oh and the awesome thing is I play sunday at church. I am the only bass player in our church and all of my other friends that play, also play on sunday. So I cant borrow one of theirs. Needless to say tomorrow morning I am going to go hit up all the pawn shops and see if I can find a cheap bass.

The man is wise!

They said that the guy who does all their repairs was off today so they couldn't give me a price or anything, but they were 99% positive that he could repair it. Well thats great... So my pawn shop search for another bass begins. Mind you it is about 10:30 am and I am looking for a decent bass for cheap... I have already looked at my budget and I can't spend any more than about $175. I went to 13 different pawn shops and all 3 music stores in the midland/odessa area. The music stores had some good basses but 2 of the stores are in a company chain together and all they had were starter kits and USA Fenders.. Pretty much both extremes of the price range. I eventually found a used Ibanez sr300 at a pawn shop. They wanted $200 for it and I talked them down to $150 with a fender gig bag. Not bad...
It was really dirty but the only real flaw is this big flake of paint missing...
So I get home plug it in and man does it have a lot of noise in the knobs... So I pull the pots out and guess who shows up to save the day...
Got the pots all cleaned up and man it sounds great now... I am going to play it just like it is for now until I get my other bass back. Then I am going to tear it apart, paint the body blue metallic, swap out all the chrome hardware for black, put on some black beauties strings and have some fun with it! I might end up doing some pickup swapping down the road but I don't know much about pickups so for now they are going to stay... All in all, the day ended well and I have another bass to play!

Sounds like you got a good deal!
Have fun. |

that crack could very well have been there for a long time, and either way is a result of a neck defect, not anything the shop did.
a good neck would straighten out easily with the rod, and with no side effects. (that crack is from the end of the rod pressing against the wood from the inside.)
they didn't charge him for turning the rod because that's a trivial procedure.
if a guy fills the air in your tire to the correct pressure, and the tire later blows, it's not his fault, it's a tire that was already bad.
the only caveat i can think of is if they really had to use a lot of force to turn the thing, even while "helping" it with loosened strings and the neck pushed into backbow, then they should have just stopped, handed the bass back to him and said "sorry, this neck has a problem".
if the bass was bought new, this is just the kind of thing factory warranties are for.

He said he was going to put some glue in the crack and clamp it, but the crack isn't big enough for him to get glue into it. He said to just play it and if the crack gets worse to bring it back in and then he should be able to glue it... I guess we will see...

Then I went on peavey's website and submitted a warranty registration form. They sent me an email saying they accepted it!!! So I called them and told them what is going on. They told me to box it up and send it to them!!! Im going to ship it out monday and then we will go from there.
As for the Ibanez sr300... I just put a set of elixir nanoweb mediums on it and it sounds great!!! I have ordered a set of monobridges and got some paint for it. I am going to buy the machine heads this week probably. Then that will just leave me the pickups, pots, 3 position switch, and strap nuts to buy over the next month or so...
