I just screwed up my bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I just installed a chrome pickup cover over my neck pickup. I spent like 20 minutes trying to get it straight. And I thought I did pretty good job. Then I drilled the holes and screwed it in. It's not even, more space below the strings and tilted toward the bridge at the top. It's not a bad job. Just not as good as I wanted. No one will notice. But it pisses me off. This is why I've put it off for so long, I was scared I would **** up. I'm pissed at myself. I've ruined a $30 pickguard. I might order a custom one soon with the holes predrilled and even.

I'm also ****ing pissed that my control plate and pickguard don't line up. There's a minor gap between them and the control plate hangs over on the bottom. I think I'm going to have a completely custom pickguard made that fits the plate perfectly and has even pickup cover holes.

Do you hold the bass perfectly perpendicular when you play it?

Probably not.

No one will notice. I didn't notice.

Fender American Jazz with a Warmoth body and other various upgrades.

EDIT: It looks way too Marcus Miller-y now. Not that that's a bad thing.

Not all of my pickguards match up in a machine fit with my control plate. Yours looks fine in the picture you posted.

The chrome pickup cover looks great, too. I'd say you did a good job. I'd be proud to play that bass, and I have some really nice looking Fender MIAs.

(I understand, though. Whenever I do any type of mod, I'm always my worst critic. My wife always gets on to me for agonizing over every little imperfection that nobody will ever notice.)

Thank you very much man. It's really my dream bass. I swear, if my house caught on fire, I would run back in for this bass. Seriously. All it needs is some new wiring and a Tom Morello style kill switch and it will be perfect ... and some new strings.

We're always our own worst critics. It really doesn't look bad, but I know what you mean, I'd be PO'ed at myself too.

Nice bass though. Very nice.

Dude I totally feel for you. I've been thinking about modding my new jazz with a thumb rest as well as a pickup cover. The only thing thats stopping me is the fear messing up my bass and regretting it for ever. Anyways it seems like you did an awsome, it took me few minutes and a little reading to find out what was wrong...so dont sweat it!

God Bless!

Do you have a better picture of it post-cover?

No. My real cameras battery is dead. And it needs some special (expensive) kind. I haven't gotten around to getting one yet.

Emotional Responses Can Be Viewed As Decisions

It's not really about the bass, is it? It's more about your emotional response. The former won't matter nearly as much when you decide to make decisions about the latter from a somewhat different perspective.

Didn't notice it. When you hold it an angle, nobody but you knows. Heck I just bumped my Alembic, but you can't tell because of the quilted maple. It shows that you play the darn thing. When you look at Willie Nelson's guitar, while he's playing, you say wow, he loves his guitar and plays it alot. Look where that old thing took him. Play on!
